Water Damage Do's and Don'ts
Here are a few pointers to help you minimize damage and maximize safety before our arrival:
Do...
- If possible turn off main water supply to your house and electricity.
- Remove as much water as possible by mopping and blotting the saturated area.
- Remove all items and furniture to elevated dry areas.
- Place wax paper or wood blocks aluminum foil between furniture legs and wet carpet.
- Wipe furniture or any wet item to remove excess water to avoid damage.
- Remove wet area rugs, wet fabrics, furs, leather goods and dry separately.
- Open doors, windows (If possible), closet doors, furniture drawers, and luggage to aid in drying.
- Stay out of any rooms where the ceiling is sagging from trapped water.
Don't...
- Use electrical appliances while standing on wet flooring or carpets areas.
- Use your household vacuum to remove the excess water.
- In case of sewage broken pipes and overflowing toilets - don't go near contaminated water.
- Turn on your heating and/or air conditioning system.
- Leave colorful materials like papers, books, boxes, curtains, draperies, upholstery, pillows etc in the wet area.
- Wait to call for professional flood damage help. Do what you can do! The longer you wait, the more damage will occur.
